Merchant City Cultural Tour
Get a 'taste' for the Merchant City, Glasgow. Play our video below.
Dating back to the 18th Century, the Merchant City is so called as it was where the wealthy tobacco lairds and traders once lived, worked and socialised. The impressive architecture by leading lights such as Alexander ‘Greek’ Thompson, Adam, Hamilton and Carrick reflects the district’s importance as a trading centre.
As stylish and happening as London’s Covent Garden, this area hasn’t lost its unique, historic appeal with award-winning conservation work preserving the beautiful pre-Victorian buildings.
The tour is available as a podcast and covers every aspect of the Merchant City, from its origins at Glasgow Cathedral and its colourful history through to today's hip bars, restaurants, shops and the area's stunning architecture.
The podcast is narrated by Dawn Steele, who starred in television show Monarch Of The Glen, and is free to download.
Dawn said: "I am a proud Glaswegian, so it was a pleasure to be asked to be the voice of the podcast and do my bit to promote the city.
"I love the Merchant City. The shopping seems to get better all the time, and the area has some of the best bars and restaurants in the country.
"If this brings more people to Glasgow to get the Merchant City experience then I will be thrilled."
